The holiday season is upon us. A time for joy, togetherness, and, let's be honest, a bit of gift-giving stress. Finding the perfect present can be challenging, especially when you're searching for thoughtful, vegan-friendly options. But fear not! I've curated a vegan gift guide featuring handy kitchen gadgets, inspiring cookbooks, and more, all available on Amazon. These selections are perfect for your plant-based friends, family or anyone openminded enough about it.
And I know my family reads this newsletter too so take this guide as my wishlist too, thanks! But first…
I want to talk a bit about being vegan during the holidays. For some of us this can be quite, let’s say challenging. Between the family gatherings, traditional meals, and navigating the endless questions about your “protein intake”, the holiday season can feel like a bit of a minefield for vegans. But hey, we’ve got this. And I’m here to help you face those challenges with confidence, compassion and maybe a little humor.
1. The “But What Do You Eat?” Question
We’ve all been there—sitting at the holiday table, answering questions like we’re on some sort of vegan trivia show. It can feel frustrating or isolating, especially when everyone else seems to bond over their turkey and gravy.
How to Handle It:
Bring a dish to share! A delicious vegan casserole, or even cookies can wow your family and prove that plant-based food isn’t boring.
If people are curious, explain your choices briefly and positively. “I’ve found that eating plant-based makes me feel great and I love discovering new flavors.” Most of the people I’ve said this to reacted like ‘okay, that’s cool’.
If the conversation feels judgmental, redirect it with humor: “I could talk about tofu all day, but tell me how’s your garden project going?” Or at least, if they have a garden. Because houses with gardens here in the Netherlands are practically for millionaires only.
2. The “You’re Too Difficult to Cook For” Myth
Sometimes, the idea of accommodating a vegan at the table can overwhelm a host, leading to comments like, “I don’t even know what to make for you.” It’s often more about misunderstanding than unwillingness.
How to Handle It:
Let your host know ahead of time what you eat and offer to bring a dish or two. This shows you’re willing to help and not expecting them to overhaul their entire menu. And this makes sure you don’t get to eat salads all day long.
Small changes like using vegetable broth instead of chicken stock or swapping butter for olive oil can make traditional dishes vegan-friendly.
Even if the host’s effort isn’t perfect, acknowledge their willingness to include you. A little kindness goes a long way in building understanding.
